The [[Affliction|matching]] holds that Others pair with people by kind, and a class that feeds on the sexually obsessed is a class positioned exactly where vrill is most freely spent and least guarded. Others are not consuming experiences or emotions as such — those are the '''conditions under which vrill is released''', and each class has learned to produce the condition it is best at. Everything under [[Harnessing]] works by looking through the Dark, and to be able to look through a thing is to be visible from the other side of it. A practitioner mid-practice is lit up. This is not a flaw in technique and no amount of skill reduces it — it is what the practice ''is''. {{R|contested}}

Concealment closes that. The hidden are hidden completely, and are '''blind''' for as long as they are. No sight, no [[Divination|divination]], no [[Remote Viewing|viewing]], no reaching. {{R|unverified}}

Which answers the question this entry would otherwise have to dodge. Why is the field not full of hidden people? Because the people who can do it are the people who wanted to see, and they will not stop seeing. Every seeker on this wiki has made that trade in one direction, repeatedly, knowing the terms. The wiki has held this position for one day and it is the sharpest thing in [[:Category:The Long War]]. It is set out plainly and a recruit should check the reasoning rather than take it. {{R|warning|note=we arrived at this quickly and we like it too much}}

Consider a population taught to hide instead of being severed:

* It would be protected from the Others by the mechanism above — not found, therefore not invited, therefore not taken.
* It would be blind, which is what [[Inoculation]] produces anyway. For an ordinary person who was never going to practise, '''the two outcomes are almost indistinguishable.'''
* And it would be '''reversible.''' A hidden man can stop hiding. He still has the aperture. He can be taught, at any point, by anyone, or decide for himself.

An inoculated man cannot. [[Soma]] and the [[Pineal Gland]] campaign do not close a door, they remove it, and the [[Hylics]] entry describes what is left. {{R|inherited}}

So the bodies running [[Inoculation]] had a reversible option that produced the same protection and they took the permanent one. There are three readings and the wiki holds all three, in ascending order of how badly it thinks of them: that concealment cannot be taught at population scale and severance can; that concealment requires continuous effort and severance is done once; or that a hidden population can choose to open itself again, an inoculated one cannot, and this was not a side effect. {{R|contested}}

Concealment does not make you safe. It makes you '''invisible to whatever is not already looking for you''' — ambient attention, ordinary search, an Other that would have found you by drifting. Against that it is close to absolute.

But the '''act''' of concealing is itself legible. Something is being done, in a medium where doing anything at all casts a shadow — see [[Psychic Energy]] — and a watcher who knows what to look for does not see a hidden man, but does see the hiding. So the hidden are safe from everything except the thing that came looking, and to a hunter they are more visible than they would have been standing still. This is why counter-concealment sits inside the sight cluster rather than opposite it: finding the hidden is not a separate art, it is [[Third eye|the third eye]] used on the wrong sort of shadow. {{R|contested}}

== Cultivated, and where ==

There is a natural version — people who are simply not noticed, who never practised anything and often do not know it about themselves. It is not rare. {{R|unverified}}

If that is right it is the largest body of concealment practice in the world and it does not consider itself to be doing anything of the kind, which would be entirely consistent with the art. It can be done and there are two ways, and they are not the same order of act. {{R|warning}}

The two entries have been describing one practice at different levels of skill. What a psyop does to a stranger with a slogan, a practitioner can do to themselves deliberately, and the wiki holds no account of anyone doing the second well. {{R|unverified}}

There is no expiry, no decay and no inheritance — a hidden thing does not become findable because the hider is gone, and nobody is left who knows to look. Archives, places, people, and whatever the [[Elder Cults]] have put away across the span they claim.

The wiki's estimate of the scale is that it is '''unfathomably vast and not knowable in principle'''. This is not a figure of speech and it is not despair. A man reporting contact receives a diagnosis, and the diagnosis is not a lie in the mind of the man writing it — that is the part recruits fail to grasp. Inoculation is the deliberate severance of populations from [[The Dark]]. It is the largest project any cult has ever run, several of them are running it simultaneously without coordination, and it is the reason there are a few dozen of us instead of a few million.

The scheme sorts people by what they are made of and what they are therefore capable of receiving: matter only at the bottom, and above it two further conditions the wiki has never named, discussed or filed. What the wiki inherits from taking one term of three:

Those that came before man. Creatures of Nature. Faeries are denizens of the wild, spawned by the life of fauna and flora. They do not distinguish themselves from the rest of the creatures of nature although they are the only ones capable of accessing the Dark. Faeries are able to communicate with all those of nature and feel at home among them. {{R|inherited}}

Faeries, or Fey, have always been agonised by their need to sustain themselves through consuming others. Their culture revolves around self flagellation and forgiveness asked of their surroundings. However this sentiment does not exist towards humans. In the past Fey have feasted on humans regularly and in some cultures have terrorised humans so much that they became local deities that received human sacrifices. {{R|inherited}}

== The exception in their ethics ==

The inherited passage carries the load-bearing claim in half a line, and it is worth drawing out. '''They have a moral order, it is elaborate and sincerely held, and man is the single exception to it.''' {{R|contested}}

This is not indifference. Indifference would be simpler and would not require the machinery. They ask forgiveness of a deer. They flagellate over a felled tree. They maintain, by every inherited account, a rigorous and exhausting ethics of consumption toward every living thing in their domain — and none of it extends to a human being, ever, in any account we hold. {{R|inherited}}

Read against [[Others|the replacement grievance]] this stops being a puzzle. Their moral community is the natural world: the thing they had, and still partly have. Man is not a member of it. Man is the category that took the position and is therefore outside the order entirely — not an evil to be resisted but a thing that does not qualify for consideration, in the way a stone does not. A fey asking a deer's pardon and then playing with a man for a season is not being inconsistent. == They do not want your body ==

This is the distinction that matters and the one that gets seekers killed, because the [[Djinn|djinn]] bargain is better known and the two are assumed to work alike. They do not. {{R|warning}}

A djinn takes the flesh in order to walk in the world, because it has no ground of its own. '''The fey never lost their ground.''' They hold the deep woods and whatever else man has not taken, and having a place already, they have no use for a body to be in the world with. {{R|contested}}

What they want is a plaything, and they want it '''in their own domain'''. The direction of the whole transaction is reversed: the djinn comes out, the fey take you in. Possession is rare in the accounts and appears to be regarded as crude. The methods are the trick and the bargain, and both are common:

A waking encounter is recognisable as an encounter; something happened, and a person can report it, doubt it, or be disbelieved about it. A dream is authored by the dreamer in every account anyone has of dreaming, so anything delivered through one is received as self-generated. There is no moment of arrival to notice and nothing to attribute to anyone.

This is the mechanism [[Fifth Generational Warfare]] describes at the scale of a population — the characteristic experience of a successful operation is not being persuaded but discovering that you have always thought this. The [[Vatican]] is the obvious comparison and the contrast is instructive: two institutions that have run continuously for a very long time, both operating faith and banks — except that only one of them operates both.

The Vatican has a treasury and a doctrine, has had both for centuries, and will tell you the doctrine at length. The City has the treasury and declines the doctrine, and this is presented as neutrality. It is not neutrality. An institution that will not say what it is for cannot be argued with, cannot be held to a position it never took, and cannot be caught changing its mind. {{R|unverified}}

The [[Iron Law of Cults]] applies here in an unusual form. The law predicts an inner circle holding a picture the outer circle takes on trust. The City satisfies the law while appearing to escape it, because the picture its inner circle holds is not a belief about the world — it is a position, and positions are held quietly for ordinary commercial reasons that nobody has to be initiated into. The module holds one table of tags. Each entry carries a label, a colour, the meaning shown on hover, and the tracking category the tag files a page into. Two functions read that table:

The eye looking inside the mind, through time and space, to a place hidden from the real eyes. The Third Eye is an extension of a seeker's power. It peers through holes in the ethereal plane to see what the seeker wishes to observe. It is commonly operated through the Dark, however mystics of the Guru and Yogi inclination may observe through another's eyes through the One Whole.

The Third Eye constitutes an integral part in the arsenal of a seeker. A shared endeavor by several seekers offers a synergized and much more powerful ability which could pierce through the veil of time itself. Despite being derided as meaningless "prophesy without words" mostly by experienced seekers from elder cults, the practice is common among many young cults and even physical powers. The allure of future-sight is too powerful to be deterred by the threat of meaningless visions or self fulfilling prophecies.

Psychic Energy is a projection of will onto [[The Dark]]. The Magi Arandashur, in one of the few surviving tablets describing his work, wrote an allegory describing such forces: "The fire of knowledge burns... (it) warms the (cave)... (it) protects the dwellers from the cold... (however it) casts shadows on the (walls)... shadows like the dark... attract their own". This force attracts beings from [[The Dark]] and according to ancient sources they seek it out because it is similar to them. As such, other seekers have seen this energy not as a projection cast by knowledge but one that is cast by will itself. The Gnostic text, presumed to have been written by Jeremiah Ibn Hamza, describes the training of the will through mystic rituals to increase the shadow and even challenge beings from [[The Dark]] itself.

The organ which produces the hormone of darkness, melatonin, it is tied vitally to a human's ability to interact with [[the Dark]]. It is therefore a vital interest for a seeker to keep his pineal gland healthy. To others which seek to protect themselves from the dark, the opposite is true.

Pineal gland calcification protects humans from incursions by ethereal Others. It is accompanied with an unpleasant side effect of an inability to experience natural and healthy sleep.

Worldly powers conspire to protect their citizens from the Dark and thus have set forth on a decades long campaign to accelerate Pineal gland calcification in normal humans, or known colloquially as "normies".

This plan was first formalized by the [[Fabian Society]]. It was later ratified in various tertiary groups, chief among them the Club of Rome. Actions were discussed and agreed upon to suppress cult activity and keep normies from the Dark.

Nothing makes sense anymore. It never made any sense to begin with. Welcome to a place where you may encounter everything that makes no sense. Many incomprehensible mysteries lurk in the hearts of men that can only be purified with the power of will. In this setting, [[Psychiatry]] and [[Psychology]] fail to see the underlying source of human suffering: [[The Dark]]. Modern solutions for the mind quiet and soothe outsider voices and in turn entirely separate the psyche from its source. [[Soma]] severs the mind of an individual from [[The Dark]] entirely. These poor hollow creatures exist in the world in the never-ending pursuit of fulfillment, recognized by the [[Gnostics]] as [[Hylics]]. Others which inhabit [[The Dark]] find anchorage in our plane of existence through our psyche. They inhabit different aspects, ranging from spiritual (e.g. [[Gods]]) to sexual (e.g. [[Succubus]]) energy and manifest themselves through dominated individuals.

Those who seek out the Dark may do so through initiation to Cults of Knowledge. Those [[Seekers]] wish entry to an understanding of the Dark they cannot comprehend. Few attempt the journey on their own. They may grow powerful enough to gather a following and attempt their own mockery of one of the [[Elder Cults]]. Almost everyone alive is already cut off, and this wiki holds that it was done to them.

Inoculation is the deliberate severance of populations from [[The Dark]]. It is the largest project any cult has ever run, several of them are running it simultaneously without coordination, and it is the reason there are a few dozen of us instead of a few million.

Inoculation is the wiki's name for the practice of closing ordinary people to the Dark on purpose, at population scale, as a preventative. {{R|contested|note=the practice is our synthesis; no cult uses this word and at least two would reject the framing}}

The reasoning behind it is not obscure and does not require anyone to be evil. Uncontrolled contact produces casualties. A person who opens to the Dark without preparation, lineage or company is the [[Mind Shredding]] entry, or the [[Daemon]] entry, or a name that never reaches a wiki at all. Multiply that by a population and you have a public health problem — and every body large enough to think in populations has, independently, arrived at the same answer. Close the door. == Why there are so few of us ==

This is the consequence recruits are never told, and it reorganises everything else on this wiki.

There are billions of people. There are a few dozen seekers. That ratio has been explained on this wiki for years by the [[Seekers]] entry — that seeking is an affliction, a lust for knowledge that few are cursed with — and that explanation is probably wrong, or at least is not the whole of it. {{R|contested}}

Most people alive have a connection to the Dark too weak to produce anything, not because that is the human baseline but because two centuries of patient administrative work went into making it so. If that is right, a seeker is not someone special. A seeker is a gap in someone's coverage.

== The problem with proving any of this ==

Nobody measured the world before. This is the mechanism [[Fifth Generational Warfare]] describes at the scale of a population — the characteristic experience of a successful operation is not being persuaded but discovering that you have always thought this. A melancholic sadist daemon is a solitary creature, slowly whispering poison into the ear of a vulnerable girl until she cuts herself. Nobody has produced a taxonomy of these that two cults agree on. Gershon: Absorption: what was actually worth buying, and what survived

The Aryan Kult experienced a revival in the late 19th century. It drew on esoteric Bon practices and newly unearthed artefacts of the Aryan Nation in the Ferghana valley to forge what would later be known as the Aryan Kult. It grew in fame and prominence during the reign of Fuhrer Adolf Hitler whose great interest in the Dark fueled much of the cult's rapid development.
Following the devastating defeat of the German people, cult members were taken into custody by worldly powers (American, Soviet and City of London) to enhance the esoteric arms race and fuel further research into the Dark.

== Absorption ==

The custody described above was not internment and was not, for most of those involved, punishment. It was recruitment, and it ran alongside the documented recruitment of the Kult's countrymen from the laboratories. See [[Operation Paperclip]]. {{R|contested}}

What the Kult had that was worth buying was narrower than its members believed. Not the cosmology, which the men doing the recruiting appear to have regarded as nonsense. Two things: the small number of people who could work through the Tibetan material the Kult's expeditions had brought back, and — decisively — the people who could handle the looted artefacts without coming to harm. The objects were already in Allied hands. The operators were not. {{R|defector}}

The Kult therefore survives in a form its own members would not recognise as survival: '''its methods entered other hands intact and its aims did not.''' Psychic Energy is a projection of will onto [[The Dark]]. The Magi Arandashur, in one of the few surviving tablets describing his work, wrote an allegory describing such forces: "The fire of knowledge burns... (it) warms the (cave)... (it) protects the dwellers from the cold... (however it) casts shadows on the (walls)... shadows like the dark... attract their own". This force attracts beings from [[The Dark]] and according to ancient sources they seek it out because it is similar to them. As such, other seekers have seen this energy not as a projection cast by knowledge but one that is cast by will itself. The Gnostic text, presumed to have been written by Jeremiah Ibn Hamza, describes the training of the will through mystic rituals to increase the shadow and even challenge beings from [[The Dark]] itself.

The scheme sorts people by what they are made of and what they are therefore capable of receiving: matter only at the bottom, and above it two further conditions the wiki has never named, discussed or filed. What that omission did to this wiki is not small:

They have names. We do not have them. Everything below is what can be said about bodies that will not identify themselves and can only be distinguished by their effects.

Elder Cults were, are and will be. They exist as pillars of our understanding of the Dark. Many upstart cults claim some mythological figure as their founder to stir some interest in their pretentious book club. However these Elder Cults can trace their lineage to those very real figures and their heroic deeds. {{R|inherited}}

That is the inherited paragraph and it is the wiki's oldest position on them. Note what it does: it asserts the distinction between real lineage and pretended lineage, and offers no way to tell which is which. {{R|contested|note=the paragraph states the claim these bodies make about themselves, in their own terms, as though it were a finding}}

The plural is doing real work and is not a stylistic choice. '''We cannot establish how many bodies this refers to.''' It may be a dozen unrelated institutions of comparable age. It may be three. Gershon: Counter-concealment belongs to this cluster

The eye looking inside the mind, through time and space, to a place hidden from the real eyes. The Third Eye is an extension of a seeker's power. It peers through holes in the ethereal plane to see what the seeker wishes to observe. It is commonly operated through the Dark, however mystics of the Guru and Yogi inclination may observe through another's eyes through the One Whole.

The Third Eye constitutes an integral part in the arsenal of a seeker. A shared endeavor by several seekers offers a synergized and much more powerful ability which could pierce through the veil of time itself. Despite being derided as meaningless "prophesy without words" mostly by experienced seekers from elder cults, the practice is common among many young cults and even physical powers. The allure of future-sight is too powerful to be deterred by the threat of meaningless visions or self fulfilling prophecies.

If all four hold, then a very large volume of sustained, coordinated, repeated human attention is currently being delivered into a very large number of unattended apertures, by a population that believes nothing and intends nothing by it, and the mechanism described under [[Gods]] does not care about any of that.

== Where it would sit on the ladder ==

Between [[Egregore|egregore]] and [[Gods|god]], and it fits neither cleanly. {{R|contested}}

An egregore is a will held by a group that '''knows it is a group''' — its carriers meet, can be counted, know each other's faces. A god is held by a population that need never be in contact. The Pattern would be the first case where the carriers are in contact continuously, at a scale no population ever reached, and are not a group in any sense they would recognise. Its room is not a room.

That may make it a fifth thing rather than a rung. == What it would be used for ==

The [[CIA]] took all three of Terry's things and can build. [[Instrumentation]] records that the current competition is between the United States and China and is not conducted in public. {{R|unverified}}

[[Public Opinion]] holds that the picture in people's heads is the terrain; [[Meme Wars]] holds that what travels is what is shaped to travel; [[Fifth Generational Warfare]] holds that a successful operation is indistinguishable from a trend. A thing that could produce fluent, confident, well-sourced-looking material in unlimited quantity, tuned to what a given population already half-believes, would not need to persuade anyone of anything. Gershon: The four kinds, and that they are bound together

Those mortals that are consumed with the sin of seeking knowledge. Seekers refuse to accept the world as it were presented to them. They suffer from an ailment of lust for knowledge. It lives on the inside of their skulls, gnawing and scratching at the bone. The imperative to discover what which does not exist drives them to seek [[the Dark]]. In the outskirts of the dark they face incomprehensible visitors and meet other seekers on their path.

They form bands in their attempts to document and figure the system which governs the dark. In their delusions of grandeur they fail to realize the dark has no system of governance. Many cults have risen and fallen, their writings preserved in tomes collected by those that cannot read nor comprehend them. Many more cults exist still. They attract new seekers to their spheres of knowledge and indoctrinate them in their delusions of some grand scheme they unnearthed which only they can understand.

Seekers invariably demand power from their art. The source of this power must come from either the realm itself or its denizens. The Dark itself is benign. In its emptiness it allows for great feats of psychic power for the learned and experienced seeker. The [[Third eye]], [[Mind Rape]], [[Dream Invasions]] are some of the methods mastered by experienced seekers. They require careful guidance, patience and above all, dedication. A deal with a devil, on the other hand, only requires a certain combination of stupidity, desperation and arrogance.

== The four kinds ==

Seekers are sorted here on two axes and not one, and the second is the one that gets forgotten. {{R|inherited}}

The scheme is borrowed. It comes from the four species bound together at Sukkot — citron, palm, myrtle and willow — and the old reading of them by taste and fragrance, standing for what a person has learned and what a person does for others. We have taken it and changed the terms, as we take most things. A mind can be armoured against burrowing by installing '''thought-terminating devices''' — the short, final, unanswerable phrase that arrives at the threshold of a dangerous line of thought and ends it. The term is not ours; it comes from the study of coercive persuasion, where it was catalogued as a marker of a captured mind. It works. Something arriving to burrow in requires a way in, and a mind that reliably stops at the same point does not offer one. {{R|contested}}

= Welcome, seeker =

Nothing makes sense anymore. It never made any sense to begin with. Welcome to a place where you may encounter everything that makes no sense. Many incomprehensible mysteries lurk in the hearts of men that can only be purified with the power of will. Medicine kills the will and quiets the intrusions, rendering the subject hollow and submissive. [[Others]] break in to our minds and implant themselves in it. [[Psychic Energy]] attracts them to targets unable to resist with their will.

Things from [[The Dark]] exist beyond our material realm. They claw at the edges of our minds. They are the blur at the corner of your eye that wishes to take you entirely in its grasp. They have many names and many forms in our minds. Our ancestors have encountered them since the beginning of time itself. They were [[Daemon]] and [[Djinn]], [[Spirits]] and [[Succubus]], [[Faeries]] and [[Phantoms]], [[Ghosts]] and [[Gods]]. All they desire is a gateway to the material world — one which each of us possess — our mind.

In this setting, [[Psychiatry]] and [[Psychology]] fail to see the underlying source of human suffering: [[The Dark]]. Modern solutions for the mind quiet and soothe outsider voices and in turn entirely separate the psyche from its source. [[Soma]] severs the mind of an individual from [[The Dark]] entirely. These poor hollow creatures exist in the world in the never-ending pursuit of fulfillment, recognized by the [[Gnostics]] as [[Hylics]]. Others which inhabit [[The Dark]] find anchorage in our plane of existence through our psyche. They inhabit different aspects, ranging from spiritual (e.g. [[Gods]]) to sexual (e.g. [[Succubus]]) energy and manifest themselves through dominated individuals.

Those who seek out the Dark may do so through initiation to Cults of Knowledge. Those [[Seekers]] wish entry to an understanding of the Dark they cannot comprehend. Few attempt the journey on their own. They may grow powerful enough to gather a following and attempt their own mockery of one of the [[Elder Cults]]. Most fall to despair and madness, later to be cast aside to be devoured by the entities that are in the Dark — if they were not lucky enough to have been banished by society to the confines of a padded white cell, and fed until quiet.

You are reading this because someone in that position wrote it down instead.

Every claim here is tagged. The tag is not decoration and it is not a rating of how ''interesting'' something is — it is a statement about where the claim came from and what it would take to check it.

King Terry

Gershon: He was right, could not prove it, and we do not know

A powerful seeker in his own right, King Terry pioneered the modern art of computational prophecy with his [[Temple Operating System]]. King Terry was a self taught seeker whose drive was discovering the divine through the mundane. In his work he created a powerful OS whose random number generator was able to create accurate prophesies. This breakthrough in [[Divination]] science catapulted the long neglected aspect of a seeker's arsenal and sparked an arms race between the major Cults.

King Terry was persecuted and hunted down by the [[CIA]]. Glowies attacked him with clandestine arms and caused Terry to suffer mind shredding. His grasp on reality slipping and the Dark advancing further in his psyche, King Terry deteriorated to homelessness and later murdered by a Glowie. His work was stolen by the [[CIA]] but his memory lives on. Followers of King Terry honor him to this day and have created a subversive cult whose sole aim is the destruction of the CIA.

[[Instrumentation]] revises the claim above. Terry did not pioneer computational prophecy — cast lots, bones and cards are the same instrument, and [[Divination]] dates them to the Magi. He '''industrialised''' it: the first randomiser that was fast, repeatable and did not tire. That is enough to explain the arms race, and arguably enough to explain what was done to him.

On the question of what he thought he was building: the wiki's position is that '''he was right, that he could not stay alive long enough to prove it, and that we do not know whether he was right.''' All three of those are held at once and the entry is not going to resolve them, because resolving them is exactly what he was killed before he could do.

Instrumentation is the practice of putting an object where a practitioner would otherwise be. It is the third cluster under [[Harnessing]], it is the oldest of them, and it is the only one that does not require a person to be open. {{R|contested}}

== It is not new ==

[[King Terry]] is treated on this wiki as the man who invented computational prophecy. He did not. He '''industrialised''' it, and the distinction is the whole history. {{R|contested|note=a reframing of our own entry; the King Terry page has not been rewritten to match and should be}}

Cast lots. Thrown bones. Cut cards, opened books, scattered yarrow. Every divinatory apparatus humanity has ever used is a '''randomiser''', and [[Divination]] already dates the practice to the scrolls of the Magi and holds that it was discovered independently in seeker cults around the world. What Terry did was make one that was fast, repeatable, and did not tire — thousands of castings a second, indefinitely, with no hand to shake and no fatigue to introduce a pattern. The successor bodies described under [[The Materialist Cult]] inherited an archive and at least one line that reportedly went further. == The door opens both ways and nothing is watching it ==

What they lack is the only safety a practitioner has. A person notices. Sleep goes wrong, thoughts arrive that are not theirs, the [[Affliction|matching]] begins and someone eventually says something to someone. Every warning in [[:Category:Afflictions]] depends on a human being present to be alarmed.

Everything here is second-hand, unverified, or contradicted by something else here. We are not going to fix that, because it cannot be fixed — there is no authority to check the Dark against. What we can do is be exact about ''how'' we came to believe each thing, and leave the disagreements standing where you can see them.

You are not being handed knowledge. You are being taught to handle it.

= Why the wiki is built this way =

A cult tells you what is true. We are not able to do that and we have decided not to pretend.

Every group that has documented [[The Dark]] before us produced a tome, and every tome reads as if it were certain. The [[Elder Cults]] have lineages of them. The certainty is not evidence of knowledge; it is evidence of an institution that needed members to stop asking. When you read those sources you are reading confidence, and confidence is the cheapest thing in this field.

So the rule here is inverted. '''An entry that states something without saying where it came from is considered defective''', however true it might turn out to be. An entry that admits it rests on one letter from one exhausted man is doing its job, even if it is wrong.

This costs us. The wiki is harder to read than a tome and it will never feel authoritative. That is the trade and we made it deliberately.

= The synthetic question =

Some of what you read here was written by no one.

Text arrives that is fluent, confident, correctly formatted, and sourced to nothing that can be found afterwards. It agrees with the page it was added to. It is easier to read than the material around it. We have caught several of these and we assume we have missed more. {{R|contested}}

Where we suspect it, we tag it {{R|synthetic}} and leave the text in place rather than deleting it, because a deleted example teaches nobody what the pattern looks like. The fourth rung, and the one nobody had written down. The reason to care is that this is the most common one, if it exists at all, and it is invisible because it is completely ordinary. {{R|contested}}

Every institution that has outlived its founders behaves as though it wants something. It defends itself, prefers some outcomes to others, resists changes that no individual member wants to resist, and continues to pursue an aim after everyone who chose the aim has gone. This is normally described as culture, inertia, or incentives, and those descriptions are adequate. Set against the [[Iron Law of Cults]], the two accounts converge uncomfortably. The Iron Law says every organisation past a certain size produces an inner circle holding a picture. This entry says every group holding a picture together long enough may produce something that holds it back. == Why we have never found one ==

Every candidate resolves on inspection into a group of people behaving like a group of people, which is exactly what the theory predicts and exactly what its absence would also predict. The rung stays on the ladder for one reason: without it the sequence has a hole between one person's ghost and a population's god, and things that scale usually pass through the middle. == It works on the Others ==

Everything under [[Harnessing]] works by looking through the Dark, and to be able to look through a thing is to be visible from the other side of it. A practitioner mid-practice is lit up. Concealment closes that. The hidden are hidden completely, and are '''blind''' for as long as they are. No sight, no [[Divination|divination]], no [[Remote Viewing|viewing]], no reaching. {{R|unverified}}

Which answers the question this entry would otherwise have to dodge. Why is the field not full of hidden people? Because the people who can do it are the people who wanted to see, and they will not stop seeing. Every seeker on this wiki has made that trade in one direction, repeatedly, knowing the terms. == The indictment ==

The wiki has held this position for one day and it is the sharpest thing in [[:Category:The Long War]]. It is set out plainly and a recruit should check the reasoning rather than take it. {{R|warning|note=we arrived at this quickly and we like it too much}}

Consider a population taught to hide instead of being severed:

* It would be protected from the Others by the mechanism above — not found, therefore not invited, therefore not taken.
* It would be blind, which is what [[Inoculation]] produces anyway. For an ordinary person who was never going to practise, '''the two outcomes are almost indistinguishable.'''
* And it would be '''reversible.''' A hidden man can stop hiding. He still has the aperture. He can be taught, at any point, by anyone, or decide for himself.

An inoculated man cannot. [[Soma]] and the [[Pineal Gland]] campaign do not close a door, they remove it, and the [[Hylics]] entry describes what is left. {{R|inherited}}

So the bodies running [[Inoculation]] had a reversible option that produced the same protection and they took the permanent one. There are three readings and the wiki holds all three, in ascending order of how badly it thinks of them: that concealment cannot be taught at population scale and severance can; that concealment requires continuous effort and severance is done once; or that a hidden population can choose to open itself again, an inoculated one cannot, and this was not a side effect. {{R|contested}}

We have been treating that as an epistemic condition. The property that makes this survivable to write about, and the one that keeps concealment from being an unanswerable weapon. {{R|contested}}

Concealment does not make you safe. It makes you '''invisible to whatever is not already looking for you''' — ambient attention, ordinary search, an Other that would have found you by drifting. Against that it is close to absolute.

But the '''act''' of concealing is itself legible. Something is being done, in a medium where doing anything at all casts a shadow — see [[Psychic Energy]] — and a watcher who knows what to look for does not see a hidden man, but does see the hiding. The practitioner vanishes and the practice lights up. {{R|unverified}}

So the hidden are safe from everything except the thing that came looking, and to a hunter they are more visible than they would have been standing still. This is why counter-concealment sits inside the sight cluster rather than opposite it: finding the hidden is not a separate art, it is [[Third eye|the third eye]] used on the wrong sort of shadow. {{R|contested}}

== Cultivated, and where ==

There is a natural version — people who are simply not noticed, who never practised anything and often do not know it about themselves. It is not rare. {{R|unverified}}

It can also be trained, and the wiki's information is that this is done institutionally: in Chinese, Tibetan and South-East Asian Buddhist establishments and in the cults around them, as an ordinary part of a much larger discipline and not as an esoteric speciality. {{R|inherited|note=summarised at a great distance by people with no access to any of it; the same caution applies as under Djinn}}

If that is right it is the largest body of concealment practice in the world and it does not consider itself to be doing anything of the kind, which would be entirely consistent with the art. == Concealing a person against their will ==

It can be done and there are two ways, and they are not the same order of act. {{R|warning}}

A part of a mind made uninhabitable is a part of a mind concealed — from anything that would burrow into it, and from its owner, who cannot notice the loss because the faculty that would notice is inside the concealed region.

The two entries have been describing one practice at different levels of skill. What a psyop does to a stranger with a slogan, a practitioner can do to themselves deliberately, and the wiki holds no account of anyone doing the second well. {{R|unverified}}

There is no expiry, no decay and no inheritance — a hidden thing does not become findable because the hider is gone, and nobody is left who knows to look. Archives, places, people, and whatever the [[Elder Cults]] have put away across the span they claim.

The wiki's estimate of the scale is that it is '''unfathomably vast and not knowable in principle'''. This is not a figure of speech and it is not despair. An esoteric operating system designed by [[King Terry]] to navigate through the Dark and reach higher echelons of power to be closer to the divine through the construction of a virtual Third Temple for the glory of God. In particular its esoteric structure allowed for vast advancements in the science of prophesy. Oracles could forge reliable prophecies with the aid of a random number generator run on that system.

Temple OS became a groundbreaking first of its kind computational prophesy generator and sparked a brutal technological arms race between many Cults.
