The Long War: new reference entry

New page

Fifth Generational Warfare is the name given — outside this wiki, by people with no interest in The Dark — to conflict waged against Public Opinion itself, at population scale, without attribution. We adopt the term because it is already in use and because it is the first military doctrine we know of that is describing seeker territory in secular language. inherited

The received sequence runs: massed manpower, then firepower, then maneuver, then insurgency — each generation moving the point of attack further from the enemy's body and closer to his mind. The fourth stopped targeting armies and targeted the will to field one. The fifth stops targeting will and targets the picture that will is formed from.

The defining property is deniability
Everything else about 5GW is arguable. This is not: a successful operation is indistinguishable from a trend, a mood, or an accident.

That is not a side effect of good tradecraft. It is the design constraint, and it has a consequence that recruits consistently fail to draw: the doctrine is unfalsifiable from the inside, and so is any accusation made under it. A wiki that treats 5GW as an explanation will explain everything and predict nothing.

We keep it anyway, for one reason. The alternative — having no name for a campaign conducted below the threshold of proof — has not protected anyone either.

Recognised in the record
The wiki described a fifth-generation campaign years before it had the phrase, and the entry still does not name it.

Pineal Gland records a programme first formalised by the Fabian Society and later ratified through the Club of Rome: a decades-long effort to accelerate calcification in ordinary people and so close them to the Dark. Set aside whether you believe it. Look at its shape. inherited

* Aimed at a population, not at persons.
* Executed over decades, at a rate below the threshold at which anyone would notice a change within their own lifetime.
* Delivered through mundane infrastructure that has an innocent explanation ready.
* Producing an effect — a duller, more compliant population — that is fully accounted for by ordinary modernity, and therefore never has to be defended.
* And structurally deniable: there is no moment at which it happened. contested

That is the textbook case, and it is already on this wiki. Mind Shredding is its counterpart at the level of the individual — clandestine arms turned on unsuspecting key figures outside of military theatres, which is what a fifth-generation campaign does when a single person is load-bearing. King Terry is the recorded instance. inherited

Who is holding this ground
Every organisation in :Category:Cults is a participant, and by the Iron Law of Cults there is no non-participant to appeal to. Briefly, and none of it firsthand:

; Fabian Society : Gradualism as doctrine — the explicit strategy of acting slower than the observation window of the people acted upon. The oldest continuous practitioner we can name, and the only one that published its method. unverified
; CIA : Reach and instrumentation rather than patience. Remote Viewing and Mind Divers are collection, not attack; the attack surface is Meme Wars. The defector material in that entry is the closest thing we hold to a firsthand account of the operational side. defector
; Aryan Kult : Absorbed and dispersed. Its surviving contribution to the field is method rather than aim, and its methods entered the others' hands intact. inherited
; Elder Cults : Deny participation, on the grounds that they predate the frame. The denial is recorded as denial.

What a defence looks like
Small, and deliberately unheroic. Vigilance is not a defence; vigilance is the vulnerability being farmed, because a population scanning for hidden causes will find them at whatever rate you supply them. warning

What appears to work, to the limited extent anything does:

* Write down what changed and when, before you know what it means. A dated record made by someone with no theory yet is the only instrument we have that a fifth-generation campaign is not shaped to defeat. It is also boring, which is why nobody keeps one.
* Record your own previous position honestly. The characteristic experience of a successful operation is not being persuaded. It is discovering that you have always thought this, and being unable to produce the moment you started.
* Prefer the tag to the theory. Marking one claim astroturf is worth more than a page explaining a campaign, because the tag can be wrong in a way that is discoverable later.
* Do not go looking for the operation. Everyone who has, on this wiki, has found one.

This is the entry that most nearly states what the wiki is for. A few dozen people cannot contest ground held by agencies and by bodies four centuries older than the agencies. What they can do is keep a dated, second-hand, openly unreliable record of what the picture used to look like, so that a change in it leaves a mark somewhere. That is the whole ambition and it is deliberately modest.

Competing accounts
{{Sourcing
| from = Open military-theory writing at one remove, one defector interview across three sessions, and the Pineal Gland and Mind Shredding entries reread against it.
| by = Gershon.
| doubt = The framework is unfalsifiable and we have said so twice above rather than bury it in this footer. The generational sequence is borrowed from writers with an interest in there being a fifth generation to consult about. The Pineal Gland reading is ours, applied retrospectively to an entry that was not written with it in mind — which is precisely the move this entry warns recruits against.
| wanted = A dated record, kept by anyone, of a picture before and after it changed. We have no instance and cannot build the method without one.
