The only faction that wants the manifestations

New page

The Frankists are the only body documented here that wants the manifestations. Every other cult in :Category:Cults is closing doors — see Inoculation — and this one is opening them on purpose, for a stated theological reason it can defend at length. contested

What they are, and what they are not
They are a heresy, and the wiki is going to be exact about this because the imprecision is not harmless.

The movement descends from a messianic claimant of the seventeenth century and, after him, an eighteenth-century successor who took the doctrine considerably further. Both were condemned by the Jewish religious authorities of their own time, in the strongest terms available to them, and fought. The later group converted en masse to Catholicism and was never accepted there either. inherited

So: rejected by the tradition it came out of, and never received by the one it entered. A sect in the gap between two faiths that both disowned it, which is the whole of its character and the reason it thinks the way it does. unverified

They are not Judaism, they are not "secret Jews", and they are not a faction of anyone. They are the thing Judaism excommunicated. Any account that collapses the heresy into the religion has stopped describing this cult and started repeating a slander that has got people killed, and the wiki treats such accounts as evidence about their authors.

The doctrine
The reasoning is coherent and should be understood before it is dismissed, because a creed you cannot state properly is one you cannot recognise when you meet it.

Redemption through transgression. If the world is fallen, then living carefully within a fallen world only maintains it. The prohibitions hold the arrangement in place. To exhaust them — to drive the world through every violation until nothing is left unexhausted — is not sin but labour, undertaken by people willing to be damned to shorten the wait for everyone else. inherited

Two features make it durable:

* It converts every objection into confirmation. Being called monstrous is expected. Being excommunicated is expected. The horror of outsiders is priced in from the beginning and read as evidence of proximity to the goal. warning
* It offers the highest possible stakes to people who have nothing. A sect with no homeland, no acceptance and no future in either tradition is offered a role in which its exclusion is the qualification. That is not a cynical observation about them. It is the strongest thing they have. contested

They agree with us and draw the opposite conclusion
This is the part that should worry a recruit, and it is why the entry sits where it does.

Others states flatly that nothing out of The Dark has ever been described as good, and that anything good in a person's life was put there by a person. The Frankists accept both of those propositions and reason from them to a place we do not go: that a world in which all good must be manufactured by hand, locally, at cost, against an inexhaustible supply of things that take, is a world that cannot be won, only ended. contested

Everything the wiki has assembled about the Dark is, in their hands, an argument for acceleration. We have no refutation. What we have is a preference for continuing, which is not the same thing and a recruit should not be told that it is.

Method, and why it is the worst idea on this wiki
Deliberate contact, maximised. Where Inoculation closes populations, this seeks manifestations, and it regards a person destroyed in the process as having contributed. warning

By the wiki's own account this is catastrophic: there is nothing out there to be gained from, every bargain documented here is a fee paid for something the payer did not understand, and a programme of deliberate opening is a programme of handing the displaced the door they have wanted since before we existed. They would agree with that description in full and consider it a summary of the plan. contested

It is also the reason they are courted. A faction that opens doors on principle is the most valuable ally an Other could have, and it is the one relationship on this wiki where we would expect the Others to be the ones negotiating in good faith. unverified

Competing accounts
{{Sourcing
| from = The public historical record of both movements, Elder Cult commentary at two removes, board archive. No contact with anyone claiming the creed.
| by = Gershon.
| doubt = We have never met one. The entire entry is a reconstruction of a doctrine from its critics and from the historical record of its condemnation, which is a bad way to learn what anyone believes. The first account above may simply be right, in which case this page documents a word rather than a body.
| wanted = Anyone holding the creed, or anyone who has met someone who does. A single modern instance that does not resolve into an accusation.
