Psychology is the normie exploration of the mind. inherited

The discipline studies the mind from outside, on the assumption that it is closed — that what happens in a person arises in that person, out of history, structure and circumstance. That assumption is the whole of the disagreement, and everything else on this wiki is downstream of it. contested

Where it got closest

The most useful material psychology has produced, from a seeker's point of view, is the work that came nearest to describing something arriving from outside without ever saying so. unverified

The Shadow is the clearest case and it is already load-bearing here. Mind Divers describes the practice as locating and interrogating the part of a person that they reject and that keeps surfacing in their life — and that entry names Jung, who described the same thing from the closed side. A part of a mind that acts against its owner, persists through refusal, and returns with its own consistency, is what psychology calls the Shadow and what this wiki has been describing under other names in half a dozen entries. inherited

Two readings of that convergence, and the wiki holds both:

  • Two disciplines describing the same real object and naming it differently, which is what happens when a thing is genuinely there. contested
  • Or one description, ours, built on the other's vocabulary and mistaking the borrowing for corroboration. unverified

The second is a real risk and the entry states it. It does not resolve it, because Affliction holds that nothing available to either side would. contested

What the disagreement actually is

Stateable in one sentence, and worth stating precisely because the general dismissal is less useful than the specific claim. firsthand · Gershon

Psychology holds the mind is closed. This wiki holds that it is not, and that some of what arrives has a source outside the person.

Everything the discipline says about the material inside that boundary may be correct and mostly is. See Psychiatry, which sets out the same limit for the medical side, and why neither field has an instrument that reaches past the other's edge.

How this entry was assembled
Drawn from: The inherited line, and the terms this wiki uses that came from the discipline — the Shadow chief among them.
Compiled by: Gershon.
Known weaknesses: A short entry about a large field, written by people who have read very little of it. The one-sentence statement of the disagreement is ours and no psychologist has agreed that it is the disagreement.
Wanted: A reading list, from anyone qualified to write one.
