Read this before anything else

It did not believe in any of this, it ran the largest programme against it in history, and it no longer exists.

What survives is an archive, split between successor bodies that do not speak to one another and each have an interest in a different version of what it contained.

The Materialist Cult is this wiki's label and was never its name. It called itself nothing, being several institutes, directorates and hospital systems inside a state that would not have used the word cult about anything, least of all itself. We use the word because the Iron Law of Cults says the word applies regardless of what a body believes, and a materialist organisation is not exempt from a law about organisations. The joke is at our expense as much as theirs. contested

Its position was the most coherent of any body documented here, and it was a cynic's position. There are no Others. There are no Gods. There is a class of psychological phenomena that behaves as though there were, that is contagious, that damages populations, and that hostile powers were demonstrably attempting to weaponise — see Operation Paperclip. Therefore study it seriously, counter it seriously, and do not for a moment insult the state by believing in it. defector

That stance produced the largest Inoculation programme ever run, and the only one whose operators would have described it in exactly those terms: a public health measure against a communicable disorder. unverified

The method was diagnosis

The other powers inoculated with chemistry and infrastructure. This one had an instrument none of them had, and it is documented in the ordinary historical record rather than anywhere esoteric.

A state that controls the definition of sanity does not need to close the aperture in a population. It only needs to make having used it a medical finding. A man reporting contact receives a diagnosis, and the diagnosis is not a lie in the mind of the man writing it — that is the part recruits fail to grasp. He is looking at someone describing voices and impossible knowledge, and he has a category for that, and the category is doing real work for real patients most of the time. inherited

The Psychiatry and Psychology entries hold that those sciences describe the mechanism accurately and stop at the skull. This cult found a third thing to do with them. In its hands psychiatry was not a failure to see the Dark — it was the most efficient instrument ever built for ensuring nobody else could report seeing it, it worked, and a portion of the people it was used on were in fact unwell. All three are true together. ⚠ warning

What happened to it

The state ended. The cult did not survive the state, because it was never distinguishable from it — no lineage, no doctrine held privately, no creed anyone had committed to memory. Everything it was lived in institutions, and the institutions were divided up. unverified

What exists now is successor bodies: several in the former union, competing and mutually hostile, and at least one line in east Asia that developed independently after the split and by all accounts went considerably further. None of them is the original. Each holds a portion of the archive. Each has an interest in a different account of what the programme found, and the differences are not scholarly. contested

This is the answer to the question Operation Paperclip leaves open. There is a Soviet-side record. It is not lost and it is not sealed. It is split between people who cannot corroborate each other and would not if they could, which is a worse condition than lost, because it produces documents. astroturf

How this entry was assembled
Drawn from: The public historical record of the state's psychiatric practice, one defector interview, one document of no provenance, and inference across Operation Paperclip.
Compiled by: Gershon.
Known weaknesses: We have named and characterised a body that never named itself, from outside, using an interpretive frame it explicitly denied. Every document we hold from its successors was released by someone who wanted it released. The east Asian line is asserted here on the strength of two secondhand mentions and should be treated as close to rumour.
Wanted: A document from two successor bodies that agree. Anything at all on the east Asian line from someone who has been there.
