Psychiatry has outcome data, replication, an adversarial literature, and a mechanism by which it can be shown to be wrong — and has been, repeatedly, by its own instruments. This wiki has accounts. Most of them are secondhand, our most-used informant has never been corroborated by anyone, and we have no procedure that could establish we are mistaken about anything.
The Materialist Cult sets out the case: a state that controls the definition of sanity does not need to close an aperture in a population, only to make having used it a medical finding. By our own standards in Help:Reading this wiki, their claims are better sourced than ours. That does not make them right about The Dark. That this can be done says nothing about whether the science is sound. It says the science is useful to someone who wants a population closed, which is a fact about Inoculation and not about medicine. unverified

Not that psychiatry is wrong. Not that its patients are seekers. Only this: that the possibility described under Affliction cannot be excluded by any instrument either discipline possesses, that both are describing the same people, and that one of the two has been used deliberately as a tool of severance while the other has not been in a position to be used as anything.
We hold no account of a seeker who was helped by refusing treatment. We hold several of the opposite. We also hold Soma, which describes severance and its price, and the Hylics entry, which describes what severance leaves — and no account in our possession distinguishes a person who was severed from a person who recovered. contested

That is a much smaller claim than the Main Page makes, and the Main Page has not been changed, because the older position is part of the record and this entry disagrees with it in the open.
Those two bodies of material sit beside each other unreconciled. That is the honest state of it.

Medical science of understanding the brain and its functions. inherited

It is the most developed account of the mind that the material world has produced, it works on the terms it sets itself, and this wiki's disagreement with it is narrow and specific rather than general. unverified

What it describes, and where it stops

Psychiatry maps the mechanism: the tissue, the chemistry, the courses conditions run, and the interventions that alter them. Within that range it is accurate, testable and improving, and nothing on this wiki contradicts a single finding of it. contested

The wiki's position is about range, not accuracy. It holds that the mind is not a closed system, that some of what arrives in a person comes from outside them, and that a discipline which begins at the skull and works inward will describe every effect of that arrival correctly and never encounter the cause. The Main Page puts it as a failure to see the underlying source of human suffering. That is the claim, and it is a claim about the boundary of the frame, not about the competence of the people working inside it. inherited

Both descriptions fit the same patient. One of them stops at the skull because that is where its instruments stop.

The reason it cannot be settled

Affliction holds that no test distinguishes contact from illness, because the symptoms of the two are the same symptoms. That cuts in both directions and it is worth stating both. contested

The wiki cannot demonstrate that anything arrives from outside. Psychiatry cannot demonstrate that nothing does. Neither discipline has an instrument that reaches past the other's edge, and the disagreement is therefore not a dispute anyone is currently equipped to resolve. unverified

A seeker who takes this as licence to dismiss the medical account has misread it. The overlap is nearly total, and in the overlap they have the better instruments.

It has been used as an instrument

Separate from anything above, and documented in the ordinary historical record rather than anywhere esoteric. inherited

The Materialist Cult sets out the case: a state that controls the definition of sanity does not need to close an aperture in a population, only to make having used it a medical finding. A man reporting contact receives a diagnosis, and the process requires no dishonest person anywhere in it — the clinician has a real category, doing real work for real patients most of the time, and is applying it in good faith. contested

That this can be done says nothing about whether the science is sound. It says the science is useful to someone who wants a population closed, which is a fact about Inoculation and not about medicine. unverified

What the record holds

Set down as record and not as counsel, per the practice on this wiki. ⚠ warning

We hold no account of a seeker who was helped by refusing treatment. We hold several of the opposite. We also hold Soma, which describes severance and its price, and the Hylics entry, which describes what severance leaves — and no account in our possession distinguishes a person who was severed from a person who recovered. contested

Those two bodies of material sit beside each other unreconciled. That is the honest state of it.

How this entry was assembled
Drawn from: The inherited line. Affliction for the undecidability. The Materialist Cult and the ordinary historical record for the instrumental use.
Compiled by: Gershon.
Known weaknesses: The boundary-of-the-frame argument is the wiki's and cannot be tested by anyone here. We have not consulted anyone who practises. The last section reports an asymmetry in our own accounts, which are the accounts of people who came to a wiki about the Dark and are not a sample of anything.
Wanted: Anyone who practises. A single account of contact that a clinician examined and could not account for.
