The Dark is a metaphysical realm of nothing. It is the absence of light and life. In such an environment the most incomprehensible beings emerge. They can not experience the material world yet they pine for what they do not know. In this curse lies the root of their despair and bitter spiteful nature. They crave what they can never experience.
Man was not the first to have been noticed by the Dark. It is however the weakest of the material plane against corruption from it. Through this lesser race these otherworldly creatures ingest their narcotic that is living in the material world.
It exists everywhere and nowhere at once. It has no place of origins and no central sport. If all sentient life is extinguished the Dark will remain still and its hopeless denizens with it. Those are called the Others, as they consist of a multitude of unique beings that refuse categorization. This does no prevent seekers to foolishly name them nor from established cults to have created tomes explaining their ranks and positions.
