The Instructions
He made it, He left, and He left something behind.
Every cult on this wiki agrees on that sentence and on nothing after it. What He left is called the Instructions, no original has ever been produced, and each cult holds that its own creed is what remains of them.
The Instructions are the most important object this wiki documents and the only one for which we have no artefact, no witness, and no account that is not a cult's account of itself. contested
This is worth sitting with rather than reading past. The wiki's method — tag the claim, name the source, keep the disagreement — was built for material like this and then applied everywhere else. Here it does what it was made for and produces nothing. Six creeds, no original, and no test that separates a faithful copy from an invention. firsthand · Gershon
Two readings of that, and we hold both:
- They were never one thing. The disagreement is not corruption of a single text. He left different things to different people, or He left something that can only be received in the shape of the receiver, and the creeds are all accurate. unverified
- They were one thing and it is gone. What survives is centuries of copying by hands that did not understand what they held, and the variance between the creeds is a measure of how much has been lost rather than of what was given. inherited
Nothing in the record decides between these. A recruit who is certain which one is true has been told, not shown.
The creeds
Set down as each cult states it. The wiki takes no position on any of them, including by the order they appear in.
- Elder Cults
- That the Instructions are text, that they are old, and that the Elder Cults hold the oldest surviving copy by unbroken lineage. They will not show it. The lineage claim is the whole of the authority and cannot be examined without ending it. inherited
- Gnostics
- That the Instructions are not text and never were. What He left was the capacity to recognise, and a written creed is already a failure to have recognised. Consistent, unfalsifiable, and the only creed that predicts its own unverifiability. contested
- Fabian Society
- That the creation was left deliberately unfinished, and the Instructions are the mandate to complete it — slowly, administratively, by those competent to do so. This is the only creed that reads the departure as a delegation of authority rather than of responsibility. unverified
- CIA
- That there are no Instructions, and that the creeds are the interesting object — a stable, cross-cultural, high-commitment structure that can be mapped and used. They are the only body here that treats the question as settled, and their operational record is not obviously worse for it. defector
- Aryan Kult
- That the Instructions were addressed to some and not to others, and are carried in lineage rather than in text. It is the only creed that makes the audience narrower than the creation, and every other creed on this list treats that as the identifying mark of a forgery. Recorded because it exists and had consequences, not because it is held open. contested
- Not yet recorded
- Creeds held by people who have not written them down, or who have not been asked. The list is short because we are few, not because it is complete.
What the departure is taken to mean
The creeds differ less about the text than about why He is not here, and this is the more useful axis to sort them on. It is also the axis on which no definitive answer is available, and a recruit should stop looking for one here. The departure means something different inside each cult, the difference is not a dispute that could in principle be settled, and this wiki has no vantage point above the creeds from which to settle it. contested
The readings we have heard, none of them ours:
- He finished, and the rest is ours. The departure is completion. Nothing is owed and nothing is coming.
- He is absent the way a parent is absent from the room. Still trusting, deliberately not watching, and the trust is itself the Instruction. This is the reading that makes the most of faith in his creations and the one that asks the most of them.
- He was driven out, or supplanted. What sits in the position now is not what made it. This produces the darkest cosmologies on this wiki, including the one recorded under Iron Law of Cults, where a cult reads the whole of reality as an inner circle keeping an outer circle uninformed.
- The departure is the Instruction. Anything still looking for Him has already failed to read it.
These are not four positions on one question. They are four different worlds, held by people who then go on to disagree about everything downstream, and the wiki records them side by side because that is the only honest thing available to it. unverified
We note without comment that the wiki's own general finding — that nothing in The Dark has ever been described as good, and that anything good in a person's life was put there by a person — is compatible with all four readings and required by none of them. See Others. firsthand · Gershon
