Concealment

Read this before anything else

It works. It works on people and it works on the Others, and almost nobody uses it.

The reason is the price: the aperture runs both ways. To look through the Dark is to be visible in it. You may see, or you may be hidden. There is no arrangement in which you do both.

Concealment is the second cluster of harnessed arts and the exact inverse of the first. Where sight uses the Dark's lack of distance to look, this uses the same property to not be found — a thing, a place, a person, or an event, held where nothing arrives at it. contested

It works on the Others

This is the claim the entry rests on and it should be stated before the qualifications: concealment hides a person from the Dark itself. contested

Others holds that nothing from the Dark can seize the material world — it must be admitted, which is why every account involves a bargain, a trick or a door opened from inside. Affliction adds that the yes is easiest to obtain from someone who cannot withhold it. Neither works on a person who is not found. A thing that must be invited cannot invite itself, and it cannot arrive at what it cannot locate. unverified

So there has always been a third option in the argument set out under Inoculation, and it is not on either side of that entry's two columns: stay open, stay hidden.

The price

The aperture does not have two settings. It is a hole, and holes do not have directions. inherited

Everything under Harnessing works by looking through the Dark, and to be able to look through a thing is to be visible from the other side of it. A practitioner mid-practice is lit up. This is not a flaw in technique and no amount of skill reduces it — it is what the practice is. contested

Concealment closes that. The hidden are hidden completely, and are blind for as long as they are. No sight, no divination, no viewing, no reaching. unverified

Which answers the question this entry would otherwise have to dodge. Why is the field not full of hidden people? Because the people who can do it are the people who wanted to see, and they will not stop seeing. Every seeker on this wiki has made that trade in one direction, repeatedly, knowing the terms. Seekers describes an affliction of lust for knowledge; this is where that affliction is charged for. firsthand · Gershon

The indictment

The wiki has held this position for one day and it is the sharpest thing in Category:The Long War. It is set out plainly and a recruit should check the reasoning rather than take it. ⚠ warning

Consider a population taught to hide instead of being severed:

  • It would be protected from the Others by the mechanism above — not found, therefore not invited, therefore not taken.
  • It would be blind, which is what Inoculation produces anyway. For an ordinary person who was never going to practise, the two outcomes are almost indistinguishable.
  • And it would be reversible. A hidden man can stop hiding. He still has the aperture. He can be taught, at any point, by anyone, or decide for himself.

An inoculated man cannot. Soma and the Pineal Gland campaign do not close a door, they remove it, and the Hylics entry describes what is left. inherited

So the bodies running Inoculation had a reversible option that produced the same protection and they took the permanent one. There are three readings and the wiki holds all three, in ascending order of how badly it thinks of them: that concealment cannot be taught at population scale and severance can; that concealment requires continuous effort and severance is done once; or that a hidden population can choose to open itself again, an inoculated one cannot, and this was not a side effect. contested

It is the second kind

Two arts were possible and the field went with the worse one. contested

Two arts and only the second frightens people who know the field. unverified

Hiding
A thing is put where nothing reaches it. Detectable in principle as an absence — a gap, a place the eye reports nothing.
Not being noticed
The thing is where it always was, in plain view, and attention slides off it. Nothing is missing. Nobody looks. There is no absence to find, because everything is present and simply not attended to. contested

The art is the second one. Not walls — attention. Nothing is missing, nothing is sealed, and there is no absence anywhere for a searcher to find, because everything is exactly where it was and no one is looking at it. contested

This is the one the Elder Cults are presumed to use, and it would explain that entry's central problem — that we cannot count them, cannot name them, and hold two secondhand encounters and no documents. We have been treating that as an epistemic condition. It may be a practice someone is performing. astroturf

The same reading applies to this wiki and the entry will not pretend otherwise. Our sources vanish, our accounts do not corroborate, our most-used informant has never been confirmed by anyone. That is either what a thin record looks like, or what a worked one looks like, and we have no instrument that distinguishes them. firsthand · Gershon

The use is noticed

The property that makes this survivable to write about, and the one that keeps concealment from being an unanswerable weapon. contested

Concealment does not make you safe. It makes you invisible to whatever is not already looking for you — ambient attention, ordinary search, an Other that would have found you by drifting. Against that it is close to absolute.

But the act of concealing is itself legible. Something is being done, in a medium where doing anything at all casts a shadow — see Psychic Energy — and a watcher who knows what to look for does not see a hidden man, but does see the hiding. The practitioner vanishes and the practice lights up. unverified

So the hidden are safe from everything except the thing that came looking, and to a hunter they are more visible than they would have been standing still. This is why counter-concealment sits inside the sight cluster rather than opposite it: finding the hidden is not a separate art, it is the third eye used on the wrong sort of shadow. contested

Cultivated, and where

There is a natural version — people who are simply not noticed, who never practised anything and often do not know it about themselves. It is not rare. unverified

It can also be trained, and the wiki's information is that this is done institutionally: in Chinese, Tibetan and South-East Asian Buddhist establishments and in the cults around them, as an ordinary part of a much larger discipline and not as an esoteric speciality. inherited

If that is right it is the largest body of concealment practice in the world and it does not consider itself to be doing anything of the kind, which would be entirely consistent with the art. It also sits geographically alongside the east Asian line described under The Materialist Cult, and we cannot say whether that is coincidence, contact, or one thing seen twice. contested

Concealing a person against their will

It can be done and there are two ways, and they are not the same order of act. ⚠ warning

The human way
Psyops. Nothing is removed and nothing is hidden — attention is managed until a person, an event or a fact is simply not attended to by anyone. This is Mind Rape and Fifth Generational Warfare applied to a target rather than a population, it is done constantly, and it works. The person is still there. contested
The other way
The Dark can wipe away reality. Not conceal it, not obscure it — remove it, along with whatever held it. We have no account of this that we can stand behind, no mechanism, and no instance. We record it because more than one source treats it as the real thing of which the human method is an imitation. ⚠ warning

There would be no victim, no absence and no witness. A wiki whose method is to name sources and follow disagreements has no purchase on this at all, and says so rather than pretending its instruments reach further than they do. firsthand · Gershon

Turned inward

It can be done to one's own mind, and this closes a loop the wiki did not know it had open. contested

The thought-terminating devices set out under Mind Rape are this art, crudely, installed from outside by someone else. A part of a mind made uninhabitable is a part of a mind concealed — from anything that would burrow into it, and from its owner, who cannot notice the loss because the faculty that would notice is inside the concealed region.

The two entries have been describing one practice at different levels of skill. What a psyop does to a stranger with a slogan, a practitioner can do to themselves deliberately, and the wiki holds no account of anyone doing the second well. unverified

What is behind it

Everything concealed by someone who then died is still concealed. inherited

There is no expiry, no decay and no inheritance — a hidden thing does not become findable because the hider is gone, and nobody is left who knows to look. Archives, places, people, and whatever the Elder Cults have put away across the span they claim.

The wiki's estimate of the scale is that it is unfathomably vast and not knowable in principle. This is not a figure of speech and it is not despair. It is the observation that a field whose central art is not-being-noticed will have accumulated, over its whole history, a body of hidden material that stands in no relation whatever to the tiny amount that reached us — and that the ratio is not estimable, because estimating it would require the thing we do not have. contested

Every wanted field on this wiki should be read against that.

Open questions

Recorded as questions because we have no answers and would rather show the shape of the ignorance. unverified

  • Whether it works against instruments, which do not attend and cannot have their attention slid off. An art built entirely against attention may have no purchase on a process that never had any. If so, every body that mastered concealment is naked to instruments and has no way to discover this. We do not know. ⚠ warning
  • Whether this wiki's own invitation-only arrangement is concealment or merely operational security. The honest answer is that nobody here decided; it was set up for ordinary reasons and it is not clear that ordinary reasons are distinguishable from the other kind. firsthand · Gershon

How this entry was assembled
Drawn from: Inference from the two-way property of the aperture, the Elder Cults entry's unexplained invisibility, and the Harnessing grouping.
Compiled by: Gershon.
Known weaknesses: We hold no account of anyone performing this. The entire cluster is inferred from the fact that sight has a cost, and from a pattern of absence that has an ordinary explanation. The indictment section was written the same day the idea arrived and has not been tested by anyone.
Wanted: One practitioner. Any account of a person or place that was found after having been hidden, and by what.
