Vatican
The oldest body on this wiki, the only one with a complete and publicly stated theology, and the only one that has never once claimed to be uncertain.
It has outlasted every cult that ever mocked it for that. A recruit should find this uncomfortable.
The Vatican is an empire of faith and an empire of banks, and the wiki records both halves because the institution has never pretended they were separable. It is older than every other body documented here by centuries, it is the only one operating continuously under the same name for that span, and it is the principal opponent of Inoculation. unverified
Its account of the Others is not ours and is internally complete. What this wiki calls Others the Vatican calls demons: created beings, fallen, permitted to act within limits, subordinate to a God who has not departed and is not absent. Every entry on this wiki that describes an Other as incomprehensible, unaligned or beyond category is a claim the Vatican regards as an error of the observer rather than a property of the thing. inherited
We do not hold their cosmology. We record that it is the only one on this wiki that has never needed revising. contested
Why they oppose inoculation
The strongest objection anyone has made to Inoculation, and it is theological rather than practical.
The faculty that receives the Dark is the faculty that receives the light of God. There is one aperture, not two. To close a population against demons is to close the same population against grace, revelation, conscience and every other thing that arrives from outside a man — and the Vatican regards that trade as damnation administered as public health. inherited
The consequence they draw is harder than the position itself: a soul that cannot be tempted cannot be saved. Merit requires the possibility of refusal. A population chemically incapable of being reached by anything is not a protected population but an unjudgeable one, removed from the possibility of both damnation and salvation, and the Hylics entry describes in this-worldly terms exactly what their theology predicts. contested
They are, on this reading, the only body in the field trying to keep the door open for reasons that have nothing to do with power. Whether that is what they are actually doing is a separate question and the wiki has no way into it. unverified
The banks
The second half, and the reason the Vatican is filed here rather than treated as a church that happens to have opinions.
Faith and finance have been the same institution here for a very long time, and it is the only body on this wiki that has run both continuously. The Fabian Society has a doctrine and no treasury of its own. The City of London has a treasury and no doctrine it will state aloud. The Vatican has both, has had both for centuries, and has survived every scandal that arrangement has produced — of which there have been many, publicly, in the ordinary financial press. unverified
This wiki notes without resolving it that an institution opposing the severance of mankind from the invisible is also an institution with two thousand years of practice at monetising access to it. Both things are true at once. The Vatican would say there is no contradiction and would be able to explain why at length. contested
The problem they pose for this wiki
Recorded here because avoiding it would be cowardice.
Everything this wiki does — tag the claim, keep the disagreement, default to unverified, trust nothing that cannot be sourced — is a method built on the premise that certainty is the failure mode. The Vatican is a two-thousand-year-old counterexample: an institution that chose certainty, enforced it, wrote it down, and is still here, while the cults that prized their own subtlety are footnotes in entries like this one. firsthand · Gershon
Two readings and we do not choose between them. That endurance is evidence their account is substantially right and ours is a fashion. Or that endurance is what the Iron Law of Cults predicts — that the largest and oldest inner circle simply out-administered everyone, and that longevity measures institutional competence and nothing else. contested
The second is more comfortable for us, which is the reason to be careful with it.
