The Psychiatrists could not help with their prescriptions and treatments because the problem was never of the material plane but of the mind. Don't listen to the voices inside your head. Don't let them in. These intrusive thoughts piercing your mind are not your own.

Things from The Dark exist beyond our material realm. They claw at the edges of our minds. They are the blur at the corner of your eye that wishes to take you entirely in its grasp. They have many names and many forms in our minds. Our ancestors have imagined them since the beginning of time itself. They were demons and Djinn, Spirits and Faeries, ghosts and gods. All they desire is a gateway to the material world - one which each of us possess - our mind.

In this setting, the world exists as it does like in any other. However a major shift in our world is the mistaken analysis of the psyche. The mental suffering we endure originates from an outside source. It is an ethereal form which demands mortals to submit so it can be let in to the material plane. Only through surrendering to the voice we allow foreign entities to take a hold over our lives and carry their plans through us. Those inflicted in turn inflict trauma on others to make them more susceptible to those from The Dark.

Those whom seek out the Dark may do so through initiation to Cults of Knowledge. Those Seekers wish entry to an understanding of the Dark they cannot comprehend. Few attempt the journey on their own. They may grow powerful enough to gather a following and attempt their own mockery of one of the Elder Cults. Most fall to despair and madness, later to be cast aside to be devoured by the entities that are in the Dark if they were not lucky to have been banished by society to the confines of a padded white cell.
