The Iron Law of Cults is this circle's name for a structural claim we did not originate: that organisation itself produces an inner circle, mechanically, as a consequence of size. inherited

The formulation is borrowed from the sociologist Robert Michels, who in 1911 studied the most sincerely democratic organisations he could find — the socialist parties of Europe, bodies whose entire stated purpose was the refusal of hierarchy — and found every one of them run by a handful of men. He concluded that this was not corruption but arithmetic, and wrote it as a law: who says organization says oligarchy. inherited

We change one word, and the change is not rhetorical. Michels described who holds the power. We are describing who holds the picture, which in this field is the same thing and hits harder. A cult, as this wiki uses the word, is not a group with robes and a founder. It is a minority holding knowledge that the majority accepts without checking — and there is no other way to run anything past the size at which one person can hold it all.

By that definition the CIA is a cult, the Fabian Society is a cult, a hospital is a cult, and a wiki with three active editors is a cult. Understand before you go further that this is a definition, not an accusation. If it reads to you as an accusation, the law has already told you something about how you were expecting to use it.

Corollaries
These are the working form. A recruit is expected to know them; they do more day-to-day than the law itself.

# The seeker who flees a cult founds a cult. Not from hypocrisy — from arithmetic. He leaves because he was in the outer circle, he gathers people who believe him, and at some size he stops being able to tell them everything. See Seekers, which describes exactly this and calls it a mockery of the Elder Cults. It is not a mockery. It is the same machine, younger. inherited
# An inner circle is defined not by what it knows but by what it has decided the outer circle will not be told. This is the operational test, and the only one available from outside. You cannot audit what a body knows. You can sometimes observe what it declines to say. unverified
# The difference between an Elder Cult and a government is budget and age, not kind. contested
# At sufficient scale the inner circle need not be human. The Daemon entry records the rumour of Archdaemons at the head of gnostic mystery cults, organising people as a shepherd organises a flock. Read as a claim about daemons it is unverifiable. Read as a claim about structure it is the Iron Law with something inhuman occupying the position the law creates — and the law creates that position regardless of what fills it.
# The law applies to this wiki. See below. It is listed as a corollary and not as a confession because it follows from the other four and would be true whether or not we admitted it.

The Gnostic reading
There is an older version of this, and it is not sociology.

The Gnostic text attributed to Jeremiah Ibn Hamza — the same source Psychic Energy draws on for the training of the will — is read by some in the Elder Cults as stating the law cosmologically rather than socially. In that reading the created world is itself the largest instance: a reality run by a minority who decided what the rest would not be told, with the demiurge as an inner circle of one. inherited

The attraction of this reading is that the wiki's own vocabulary already fits it without adjustment. Hylics are precisely an outer circle defined by what it was never told. Gnostics are precisely those who noticed. If you accept it, the Iron Law is not a regrettable feature of large human groups but the shape of everything, and every cult on this wiki is a scale model of the cosmos.

This is one cult's reading of the departure and not the wiki's frame. Others hold that He finished, or that He is absent and still trusting, or that the leaving was itself the instruction; the readings differ between cults and there is no vantage point here from which to choose between them. See The Instructions. We record this one because it is old and widely held. We do not lean on it. A theory that explains the CIA, the Fabians, the heavens and your workplace with equal ease is not obviously explaining any of them.

Competing accounts
Nobody here disputes that inner circles form. The argument is about why, and the three answers are not compatible.

The third is the one to sit with. It says the Iron Law is indistinguishable from ordinary institutional exhaustion — that what a seeker experiences as being kept from the truth is more often nobody having assembled it. We have no method that can tell those apart from outside, and we have not found anyone who claims to. contested

Applied to us
Three accounts have made effectively all of the edits on this wiki. Those three settled the reliability tags, wrote the meanings the tags carry, and decide in practice which claims get marked contested and which stand unmarked. A tag is a ruling about what you should believe. We built the tag system specifically to prevent an authority from forming here, and the tag system is now the authority.

The consensus field on every entity box is a count of heads. Heads can be manufactured, and a wiki that is invite-only has simply moved the manufacturing upstream to whoever sends invitations.

None of that is fixed by noticing it, and this section is not an apology. It is a dated record, placed where a recruit reading in five years can check whether it got worse. If you are that recruit: compare the edit counts, check whether the tag meanings in Module:Reliability have been changed and by whom, and see whether this section still exists.

What the law does not license
It is very easy to leave this entry worse off than you arrived, so:

* "It's a cult" now carries no information. If everything is a cult, the word has stopped doing work as a warning. The useful questions survive it: what is this body not saying, who benefits from that, and what would I expect to see if it were otherwise. warning
* The law predicts inner circles, not competence. A cult in this sense is not thereby effective, coordinated, or aware of itself. The defector's account above is the most common case and it describes an organisation that could not conspire if it tried.
* Do not use it to dismiss an account. "You would say that, you are in a cult" is true of every source on this wiki and every person reading it, including you. It is not an argument, it is the water.
* Do not use it to excuse this wiki. The law explains why we drift toward authority. It does not entitle us to.

{{Sourcing
| from = Michels at two removes, one Elder Cult commentary quoted secondhand, one defector interview, and the wiki's own edit history — which is the only primary source in the list.
| by = Gershon.
| doubt = The definitional move in the third paragraph — from oligarchy to cult, from power to picture — is ours, is doing all the work, and is exactly the kind of move this wiki tells recruits to distrust. Two of three accounts below come from texts nobody here has held. The section on this wiki is firsthand and therefore written by an interested party.
| wanted = Anyone who has read Michels in the original. Any organisation, of any size, that demonstrably has no inner circle — a single counterexample would do more for this entry than another source agreeing with it.
